In early 2023, the tiny pretty postcard North Yorkshire village of Harome was named one of the ‘poshest’ in the UK by The Times. So why the ‘posh’ tag what is on the doorstep of Harome
The Britain’s 22 ‘poshest’ villages to live in list, compiled by The Times, ranks Harome up right there with the likes of picture-perfect villages such as Studland, Alderney Edge and Castle Combe in Dorset, Cheshire and Wiltshire respectively. Hodnet in Shropshire grabbed first place whilst Harome was ranked number 12 of the 22 listed.
Harome is a small village in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire just 2 miles south-east of the popular market town of Helmsley, and 24 miles north-east of York. The village has a population of around 260 and is on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.
So how did the picturesque little village of Harome tick all the boxes when it comes to an upmarket country lifestyle? It has several listed buildings, a duck pond overlooked by the country house Pheasant Hotel, a couple of churches, the 14th-century Star Inn which has been awarded its own Michelin star. It is ideal to head off to nearby Helmlsey for posh shops, tearooms, a medieval castle and old Cistercian abbey.

Overdale Cottage itself sits opposite the red telephone box landmark on the ‘Main Road’ that leads through Harome village. It is within 200 yards of The Star Inn, The Pheasant Hotel and very close to St. Saviours Church.

- Ebor Way – 76 mile long distance walk starting from Helmsley to Ilkley in Wharfedale in the peak District. It connects the Cleveland Way and Dales Way long distance paths and passes through the City of York
- Cleveland Way – is a 109 mile (175km) hiking trail through beautiful and ever changing landscapes and scenery across the North York Moors and the Yorkshire coastline. It starts at Helmsley, pass Sutton Bank, the White Horse at Kilburn and ends up following the coastline down to Filey Brigg, a birdwatchers paradise. The trail offers the best of both worlds, heather moorland and stunning coastal scenery.

- RAF Wombleton – 1.6 miles away. East of Harome is the old Royal Air Force Wombleton and a former Royal Air Force sub-station in North Yorkshire. Originally Lancasters, Wellingtons and Halifax bombers flew from here. It is now a private airfield and the location of a popular caravan campsite.
- River Riccal – The River Riccal is a river of North Yorkshire, England, lying within the North York Moors National Park. It is a tributary of the River Rye which it meets East on Nunnington near Salton, which in turn is a tributary of the well known River Derwent.
