A walk in the countryside is really good for you and the Yorkshire countryside offers some of the best walking in the UK.
There is nothing better than getting outside and enjoying a walk in the countryside. It is great for our mental well being, reducing stress relief, clearing the mind, and puts a smile on our faces. It is also a wonderful way to explore the local area, enjoying the delights of nature at its best and an opportunity to see abundant wildlife.
It is thought that being out the countryside is “restorative” as it allows people to switch off as nature does not make any demands of you. Watching wildlife in its natural habitat, the hovering hawks seeking out prey, rabbits darting about in the hedgerows, butterflies fluttering in the breeze and red kites soaring in the thermals. It is also the delight of soaking in the many vibrant and colourful wild flowers and trees in blossom, providing a feast for the eyes and mind to enjoy.
Great Local Pub Walks
Our Helmsley Hideaway cottage is set in a pretty village only 3 miles from the popular market town of Helmsley surrounded by farmland, right in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside. It is also on the edge of the North York Moors National Park with the many delights and outdoor pursuits it has to offer visitors. There are many walks both locally and further afield that can be explored, long and short. Incorporate a pub or café on route too, there are plenty of excellent ‘pit stops’ both locally and more than can be incorporated into a walk. Check out all the best options to eat and drink in the local area.
Local Dog Walks
Many of our guests bring their four legged friends and we welcome them at Overdale Cottage. Whatever the time of the year we have our ‘Muddy Boot & Muddy Paw Wash’ option outside the cottage just in case of muddy and wet walks that we know our dogs love too.
To enjoy and explore the immediate area and villages there are a couple of very enjoyable circular local walks via the neighbouring village of Nunnington. You can follow any of the well marked footpath trails and bridleways from Harome across the farmland, nature woodland, over the River Rye via small ponds, local fish farms and of course well placed pubs to rest up for a while.
