It was our first visit to the North York Moors and we were excited. We were looking forward to a long weekend of exploring, walking on the moors, visiting pretty villages and checking out both market towns of Helmsley and Pickering.
After a long journey from Berkshire we decided to stop at Huckleberry’s American Diner, the UK’s first ‘Man v Food’ diner, just south of Castle Howard on the A64. After that we felt we were on truly on holiday, however our brunch would definitely have to be walked off, and soon.
Driving by Castle Howard
The excitement was ramped up soon after we turned off the A64 following the signs to Castle Howard on the A1237. What a lovely scenic and spectacular drive from there all the way to Harome. It is a five mile dead straight but undulating tree lined avenue. Passing the castle entrance, through two sets of old castle walls, an 18th century ornamental gatehouse and a 100′ high commemorative obelisk built back in 1714.
We went back to Castle Howard several days later and enjoyed walking all round the estate. The walk went via the well stocked farm shop, impressive courtyard, The Obelisk, Gate House, Mausoleum, The Temple of the Four Winds, an intriguing Pyramid structure, around The Great Lake and into the quaint village of Coneysthorpe. You get some fantastic views of Castle Howard in its full splendour from various points.
Nunnington Hall on the River Rye
The route next takes you through Slingsby and by the pretty village of Hovingham, stop at the lovely bakery for an excellent fresh sourdough loaf. Onwards to Nunnington and pass by the impressive National Trust’s Nunnington Hall manor house set on the banks of the River Rye.
The Village of Harome
Next stop is Harome and time to check out where the closest pubs are. A short walk from Helmsley Hideaway, Overdale Cottage is the old Saxon church and then check out The Pheasant Hotel overlooking the village duck pond. Then up to see the impressively rebuilt thatched roofed Star Inn at Harome gastro pub after it was totally destroyed by fire in late 2021.
Time to Explore Helmsley
Time to head off to popular market town of Helmsley for a lovely hearty walk up and around the Duncombe Park Estate, past the ruins of Helmsley Castle and into the estate’s forest and woods beyond. Then back down the hill via the Cleveland Way for a mooch about Helmsley market and exploring the many independent shops and boutiques. Time to pick up some enticing fresh produce for dinner from Hunters of Helmlsey and grab a rewarding handcrafted beer at the Helmsley Brewing Co.
Our holiday in the North York Moors has started well. Time for a relaxing evening, home cooked food and a glass of wine.
