We are spoilt for choice of superb local village pubs to Michelin starred restaurants and have handpicked a number that are in our local area. There are few others options added that can be visited if you are in the exploring other areas. This list is in no way exhaustive and there are many other great places to eat locally too.
Many of the local restaurants, pubs and cafés source seasonal products locally to get high quality, fresh and organic produce. This includes specialist farms and suppliers, local markets, seafood direct from harbour wall, all helping sustain the local businesses in the area.

Local Michelin Starred Restaurants
- The Star Inn, Harome – Short walk away – (2 AA Rosettes and Good Food Guide). A lovely thatched inn is recognised, this for its great food with famed Andrew Pern at the helm. The Star Inn is essentially an old style inn serving ‘modern Yorkshire’ food made primarily from locally-sourced seasonal ingredients, such as local game, North Sea fish using fresh herbs from its own kitchen garden. (Sadly as this is being written, news has just come in that The Star Inn restaurant has sadly completely burnt down, fingers crossed they will be back soon).
- Black Swan at Oldstead – 10 miles, 20 mins drive – Head chef, Tommy Banks, once Britain’s youngest Michelin-starred chef and has won Great British Menu twice. He has created an innovative menu served in a candlelit dining room with Persian rugs and log fires. Accolades include: 4 AA Rosettes, Good Food Guide & TripAdvisor’s 2020 Travellers’ Choice Best Fine-Dining Restaurant in the UK & 4th best in the World.
Restaurants with ‘AA Rosettes’ – Annually Awarded
- The Pheasant Hotel, Harome – walking distance – (3 AA Rosettes and Good Food Guide). The restaurant is set around a pretty courtyard of fruit trees and a superb menu that makes full use of locally foraged wild food.
- The Fairfax Arms, Gilling East – 8 miles, 15 minutes – (2 AA Rosette), a traditional country inn in a lovely picturesque village. Check out the imaginative dishes that make the most of the superb local produce as possible.
- Feversham Arms, Helmsley – 2.8 miles, 7 mins drive – (2 AA Rosettes), Enjoy fine dining and a relaxing afternoon tea in this popular haunt. Drinks by the outdoor pool on summer days is hard to beat.
- The Worsley Arms Hotel, Hovingham – 5.8 Miles, 12 mins drive (2 AA Rosettes), nestled Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty the menus reflect Yorkshire’s great local food and larder to perfection, all with their own personality and contemporary twist.
- The White Swan Inn, Pickering – 13 miles, 22 mins drive – Roaring log fires, delicious home made food with locally sourced produce and meat from the Glaves butchers, a renowned and award winning family run butchers. Head chef, Darren Clemmit has consistently achieved AA rosette-accredition for his food every year since 1997.
- Mallyan Spout Hotel, Goathland – 26.4 miles, 41 mins drive – (1 AA Rosette), the hotel is named after the 70ft high tumbling waterfall found only a short walk away and behind the hotel. There is menu bursting with locally sourced produce from Whitby fish to local cheese.
- The Star Inn the Harbour, Whitby 34 miles, 53 mins drive – (1 AA Rosette), A little further out but if visiting Whitby then check out this superb sister restaurant to Andrew Pern’s, Star Inn at Harome. Menus feature ‘Catch-of-the-Day’ fish and meat specials and also world famous North Yorkshire Moors produce, such as ‘furred and feathered’ game, as well as a seasonal ‘All Day Menu’.
Good Food Guide & Good Pub Guide Recommendations
- The Hare Inn at Scawton – 7.6 miles, 18 mins drive – Fine dining in a lovely and characterful 13th century inn at Scawton. It offers exceptional food with a wonderful personal touch and real log fires setting a lovely cosy atmosphere.
- Crown & Cushion, Welburn – 12.6 miles, 22 mins drive – This refurbished 18th Provenance Inn pub in the heart of the village is complete with a wood burning stove. It is already gaining a great reputation for real ale & good food with its classic British menu. It is their belief that keeping the food miles low (it has its own kitchen garden) and the quality high is the simple route to a successful food-based yet experiential business. Dogs are welcome in the bar area.
- Durham Ox, Crayke – 13.8 miles, 15 mins drive – A 300-year-old pub offering a locally sourced menu. A Provenance Inn that is a very popular traditional pub with flag stone floors, exposed old beams, oak panelling and roaring log fires in winter. Dogs are allowed in the bar.
- Carpenters Arms, Felixkirk – 14.8, 26 mins drive – Nestling beneath the popular Sutton Bank escarpment is one of Yorkshire’s Favourite Pubs and great to visit after an enjoyable walk. Part of the award-winning Provenance Inns where local sourcing is at its heart. It has a strong emphasis on game as well as vegetables straight from the kitchen garden. Dogs allowed in bar area.
- The Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge – 16 miles, 25 mins drive. A legendary pub, real fires, beer heaven and large portions of fabulous pub grub served all day (noon-10.00pm), with tremendous views over Rosedale and Farndale. Dogs allowed in bar.
- Fox & Rabbit, Lockton – 17.2 miles, 28 mins drive. A traditional country pub offering good food after a day out walking or biking in the nearby Dalby Forest. Sister pub of The Horseshoe Inn (below). Dogs allowed in bar area.
- The Horseshoe Inn, Levisham – 19.7 miles, 33 mins drive – Sit outside right on the village green for a good pub lunch, looking down the old stone-built village, listen out for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway steam train passing by. The Horseshoe Inn was featured in an article for The Telegraph’s ‘The 30 best winter pubs in Britain, for dog-lovers, walkers, foodies & more’. Dogs are allowed in the bar.

- The Feathers Hotel, Helmsley – 2.7 miles, 7 mins drive. A traditional inn on the bustling Market Square in Helmsley with delicious seasonal menus full of local taste & flavours.
- La Trattoria, Helmsley – 2.7 miles, 7 mins drive. An Italian bistro, Mediterranean bake-house, contemporary cocktail bar and bistro all rolled into one, based in Helmsley Market Place.
- White Swan, Ampleforth – 7.2 mils, 14 mins drive. Traditional country pub that is the hub of village life as we welcome locals and visitors alike serving delicious homemade food from locally sourced ingredients
- The Sun Inn, Normanby– 10 miles, 17 mins drive. Located on the outskirts of the North York Moors, The Sun Inn at Normanby is a family run country pub serving a range of traditional pub food and a selection of fine ales.
